Hercules' FAQ

Below are some questions authors have been asking about the new service, Book Posting Application for Quality Reading Products. Please contact us if you have any others.

What am I getting for my payment?

You are getting more visibility in a smaller outlet, one which will be nurtured to grow along the way. We are starting out tiny and adding titles gradually and carefully. Authors keep their earnings. There is only the one-time fee. You will also get a 40% off discount on Hercules services, not including the first one. This in itself is an excellent investment. Hercules will promote your work for you as well, on social media and through mass emails and ads.

Is this a pay-to-review site?

No, it is not a pay-to-review site. Your book is screened so we can decide if we want to post it; we have to read it to do that and may as well post a review.

Why are you doing this, trying to compete with the big guys?

We are not trying to compete; we are trying to introduce quality control in a wildly out of control market. The work an author puts into a quality product is lost. We are trying to be selective so readers do not have to wade through a bunch of unedited junk.

Suppose you do not like my book and I have paid the fee to post?

Your payment is returned promptly through PayPal with the polite e-mail declining your submission.

How do you decide what is acceptable? Is it all your personal taste?

Well, the work must be engaging, interesting, educational, or entertaining; there must be relatable characters or information to share. The work must be edited or editable. All genres are considered. Vulgar and obscene work will probably not be accepted, unless there is a context within the novel that makes vulgarity and obscenity necessary. We will look at previous reviews as a basis of comparison, but that is not the sole focus of acceptance. An author does not need a track record to be accepted.

Who sets the price to charge readers?

The author does, but please keep in mind that if you lower your price, Amazon will sometimes find out and lower yours on their site.

I am enrolled in KDP Select; can I sign up with Hercules?

You may, but you have to wait until the 90 days runs out before we can post your work for sale.

What do I need to send to you to post my work for sale?

The end result should be a formatted (page breaks in between chapters) pdf file that is error free and has a cover embedded on the first page. You will need to include a separate attached cover as a jpg file. This statement needs to be included on the copyright page so that work is not shared or pirated:

This ebook is licensed for your personal enjoyment only. This ebook may not be re-sold or given away to other people. If you would like to share this book with another person, please purchase an additional copy for each recipient. If you’re reading this book and did not purchase it, or it was not purchased for your use only, then please inform us at http://www.bzhercules.com/contact_us.htmland purchase your own copy. Thank you for respecting the hard work of this author.

Ideally, we would like to receive a word document of your work so we can format, edit, and place what is needed.

Suppose I want to remove my posting from Hercules? Do I get a refund?

You may withdraw at any time. You will not receive a refund. By the time it is posted, we will have spent a large amount of time getting the file ready, etc. Our time is worth a great deal more than the nominal fee we charge.

Why are you charging for this service? Do I get a royalty for my sales?

We are charging because we pay to rent the website, spend time driving traffic to the website, place ads, and use media to promote you and the website. We also edit much of your work, which is a paid service usually. You receive a great deal of support and are also a free agent here. You also keep all of your earnings.

How do I know you won't rip me off and keep my money from my sales?

We are a business and we have a reputation to develop and maintain. That would not be a wise move on our part, to rip you off!

How are transactions handled?

All transactions go through PayPal, both the customer sales and payments to you.

When do I get paid for my sales?

You will be paid for your sales, if any, on the 15th of  the month.

Can I get reviewed on your site?

Yes, your book listing is linked to a blog page where the reader can comment.

Why do I post in pdf? Isn't there a risk of sharing?

This site only accepts pdf files for upload and sale. If formatted properly, the pdf is nicely uploaded to most ereaders and can be converted to ePub after the customer downloads it. Smashwords offers a pdf, and we have followed their lead by embedding a warning statement in the front matter of your work. Print books have been shared for years, if you really think about it.
